3,124 US counties ranked by mean adjusted gross income per return, from highest to lowest. First are Teton County, WY ($509,150), Pitkin County, CO ($280,730) and Summit County, UT ($265,720). The middle one of the 3,124 has $68,429.

What this measures

Average adjusted gross income (income after a few deductions, as reported to the IRS) per tax return. Business and farm losses are subtracted. It counts only people who file, and people who earn too little to have to file are missing, which makes the poorest places look better off. Source: IRS Statistics of Income.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
