3,221 US counties ranked by median age, from lowest to highest. First are Madison County, ID (21.4 years), Lexington city, VA (22.5 years) and Radford city, VA (23 years). The middle one of the 3,221 has 41.5 years.
What this measures
The middle age of the county: half the residents are older and half are younger. The typical county is 41.5, and four in five are between 36 and 49. The extremes come from one big group of residents, such as retirees or students: 68.9 in Loving County, Texas and 68.4 in Sumter County, Florida, against 21.4 in Madison County, Idaho, where a university sets the middle age. Since it is a middle value, county figures cannot be averaged into a state figure. Source: Census ACS 5-year.
For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.

More on median age
A ranking describes places, not the people in them, and a high or low place does not by itself say why. All US rankings.
