US Counties With the Highest Share Separated

2,256 US counties ranked by share separated, from highest to lowest. First are Lee County, KY (6.77%), Holmes County, MS (6.57%) and Woodruff County, AR (6.36%). The middle one of the 2,256 has 1.71%.

What this measures

The percentage of people aged 15 and over who are separated. This is not a fifth group next to the other four. The Census counts a separated person as married with the spouse away, so this is part of the married share and must never be added to it. Source: Census ACS 5-year.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
