US Counties With the Highest Median Household Income

3,208 US counties ranked by median household income, from highest to lowest. First are Loudoun County, VA ($178,710), Santa Clara County, CA ($159,670) and San Mateo County, CA ($156,000). The middle one of the 3,208 has $63,190.

What this measures

The income of the middle household: half of households earn more, and half earn less. It counts all money income before taxes. Since it is the middle value, not the average, a few very high incomes do not change it. Source: Census ACS 5-year.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
