Countries With the Lowest Redistribution
Every country with a figure for redistribution, ranked from lowest to highest. The top three are India (2.67%), Mexico (3.77%) and China (6.22%). The middle country of the 45 has 33.1%.
What this measures
Reduction in the Gini coefficient from taxes and transfers, in % reduction in the Gini. Source: OECD. For this measure, no agreed better direction.
The Gini before taxes and payments minus the Gini after them, as a share of the first. It shows how much of the inequality produced by the market the government removes. It is built from the before-tax Gini above, so their pair is built from the same numbers and flagged. No "better" direction is set: a country may redistribute little because its market incomes are already equal.
