US States With the Lowest Share of Taxes From Property

51 US states ranked by share of taxes from property, from lowest to highest. First are New Mexico (13.6), Delaware (14.1) and Alabama (15.6). The middle one of the 51 has 27.6.

What this measures

The percentage of a state's total tax money that comes from property tax. It runs from 62% in New Hampshire, which has no general sales tax and no broad income tax, to under 15% in states that rely on taxes on oil, gas and minerals or on sales. This shows how a state raises its money, not what any owner pays. For that, see the effective property tax rate, the one tax measure here available for each county. For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
