US States With the Lowest Net Domestic Migration Rates

51 US states ranked by net domestic migration rate, from lowest to highest. First are New York (-8.98), California (-8.79) and Hawaii (-7.66). The middle one of the 51 has 0.464.

What this measures

Net moves from other states per 1,000 residents, every year from 2001. July 2009 to July 2010 is missing, since it falls between two editions of the estimates. It is an estimate built mostly from addresses on tax returns, so it is a longer, smoother relative of the IRS moving data, not a separate count. Source: Census population estimates.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.

A ranking describes places, not the people in them, and a high or low place does not by itself say why. All US rankings.
