US States With the Lowest Millionaire Tax Returns

52 US states ranked by millionaire tax returns, from lowest to highest. First are Puerto Rico (0.08), West Virginia (0.69) and Mississippi (0.88). The middle one of the 52 has 1.73.

What this measures

Tax returns filed from the state with adjusted gross income of $1 million or more. Residents, not movers: the count rises when millionaires move in, and also when residents have a good year in the stock market. There are no figures for 2002-2009, when the IRS state tables stopped at $200,000. Source: IRS Statistics of Income, state data.

This is a count, so it is ranked per 1,000 residents. Ranked by the raw total, it would just list the biggest states.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
