US States With the Highest State Taxes as a Share of Income

50 US states ranked by state taxes as a share of income, from highest to lowest. First are New Mexico (12.3), North Dakota (10.7) and Hawaii (10.5). The middle one of the 50 has 6.29.

What this measures

All state government taxes as a percentage of residents' income, from 1970. It covers the state government only, so it is lower than the combined state and local tax load wherever local governments tax heavily. Source: Census state tax collections.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
