US States With the Highest Share of Taxes From Individual Income

51 US states ranked by share of taxes from individual income, from highest to lowest. First are Oregon (42.1), Maryland (35) and Montana (34.3). The middle one of the 51 has 22.2.

What this measures

The percentage from income tax on people. It is zero in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming, a real zero and not missing data. New Hampshire's 1.8% is its tax on interest and dividends, and Washington's 1.4% is its tax on investment profits (capital gains). Capital gains have no line of their own, since almost every state taxes them as regular income, so they are already in this figure. Source: Census government finances.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
