US States With the Highest Share of Taxes From General Sales and Gross Receipts
51 US states ranked by share of taxes from general sales and gross receipts, from highest to lowest. First are Washington (49.3), Tennessee (46.6) and Arizona (45.7). The middle one of the 51 has 24.9.
What this measures
The percentage of total tax money from general sales and 'gross receipts' taxes. Note the second part: the Census puts taxes on a business's total sales here. So Oregon seems to raise 4.2% from 'sales' with no sales tax at all. That figure is its Corporate Activity Tax. Washington's B&O tax and Texas's margin tax are here too, which is why those states show no corporate income tax. Source: Census government finances.
For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
