US States With the Highest Share of Taxes From Corporate Income

51 US states ranked by share of taxes from corporate income, from highest to lowest. First are New Hampshire (14.9), New York (13.3) and Illinois (11.9). The middle one of the 51 has 5.78.

What this measures

The percentage from taxes on company profits. A zero does not mean businesses go untaxed, and this measure alone will mislead about any state. Businesses are taxed three ways, filed in three places. Tax on profit is this line. Tax on total sales, which Nevada, Texas, Washington and Wyoming use instead, is filed under general sales. Tax for the right to be incorporated is the corporation licence tax. Delaware raises 30% of its tax money that third way and 6% this way. Source: Census government finances.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
