US Counties With the Highest Median Property Tax Bills

3,182 US counties ranked by median property tax bill, from highest to lowest. First are Bergen County, NJ ($10,000 or more), Essex County, NJ ($10,000 or more) and Hunterdon County, NJ ($10,000 or more). The middle one of the 3,182 has 1,527.

What this measures

The yearly property tax bill, in dollars, of the middle home-owning household that pays one. Households with no bill are left out, so this is what payers pay, not the average across all owners. Source: Census ACS 5-year.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
