401 US counties ranked by homicide rate, annual, from highest to lowest. First are Holmes County, MS (95.1), Leflore County, MS (87.2) and Oglala Lakota County, SD (81.9). The middle one of the 401 has 7.92.

What this measures

Deaths recorded as homicide in the year, per 100,000 residents, from death certificates (CDC WONDER). It is shown only for places and years with 10 or more homicides, so small counties appear rarely or never. Source: CDC WONDER mortality.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
