US States With the Lowest Price Level of Rents (US = 100)

51 US states ranked by price level of rents (US = 100), from lowest to highest. First are Mississippi (54.9), West Virginia (56.2) and Arkansas (56.7). The middle one of the 51 has 85.8.

What this measures

How much rent costs here for a similar home, compared with the US average of 100. The Bureau of Economic Analysis works it out from rents people report in the American Community Survey, allowing for the size, age and type of the home. It uses renters' rents for owners too. Each year is compared with that year's US average. For states and metro areas only. Source: BEA Regional Price Parities.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.

A ranking describes places, not the people in them, and a high or low place does not by itself say why. All US rankings.
