US States With the Highest Average Household Electricity Prices

51 US states ranked by average household electricity price, from highest to lowest. First are Hawaii (42.4), Connecticut (29.9) and Massachusetts (29.6). The middle one of the 51 has 14.3.

What this measures

What homes paid for electricity on average over the year, in cents per kilowatt-hour: all household electricity bills in the state divided by the electricity homes used. A kilowatt-hour runs a 1,000-watt heater for one hour. Prices are in each year's dollars, not adjusted for inflation, so compare states within a year rather than across decades. From the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), counting every kind of electricity company, from 1970. Source: US Energy Information Administration, EIA-861.

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
