What this measures

Bookings into this county's jails during the year, per 100,000 residents aged 15 to 64. The middle county is 2,033, five times its jail population rate, since most jail stays are short. A county that books many people for one night each has a high admission rate and a low population rate. The two describe different kinds of systems. Source: .

For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
