What this measures
Air quality from monitors and the damage natural disasters are expected to do to buildings each year, flipped so higher is better. It covers only counties with an air monitor, about one in four. The county's own model of fine dust is left out, since it is fitted to the same monitors. Source: PlaceStats composite score.
A standard deviation is a typical gap between places.
For most measures, a national ranking mostly sorts places by income and by how urban they are. Each county’s own page compares it with the 50 counties most like it instead, which is often the fairer view.
